Breaking the monotony

I would imagine after doing something 18,000 times, it would feel very redundant.

By my calculations, my father has driven between our house and his office in Lynn about 18,000 times. That's 2 trips a day, 250 working days per year for 36 years. I'm sure commuting in Boston presents enough incidents of road rage or other excitement to break the routine, but by and large, a very predictable routine.

We made sure that my dad's last trip to work would be memorable.

Just before 6am on Friday, Police Chief Ferullo showed up at the door and read him a letter of commendation written by the mayor.

If you didn't catch it at the end, they informed him they were going to give him a police escort to the city line.

Another angle

When he returned from work, my mother had set up the finish line for him.

I find this funny since the track "legacy" in the family really started because Mom just wanted me out of the house. Since we sort of knew the assistant coach, she unceremoniously dropped me off at the indoor track my freshman year and informed me I was joining the team. Apparently I had too much energy or something. Worth pointing out that Cris was not forced to join a sports team!

But I digress - I was so bummed I couldn't make it to the retirement party on Thursday that I concocted this hair brained scheme. To my surprise and amazement, when I called Mayor Galvin, he thought it was a great idea. He was even kind enough to suggest he remembered our family (we vote, but are definitely not a politically active family). He called the police chief, who had been a sort of resource officer at the White Elementary School where we all went and where my mother volunteered, and as you can see from the videos, he enthusiastically endorsed the idea. The rest is history!
