September 11

This year's anniversary of the 9/11 attacks seemed consumed, at least in the media, with whether or not it is ok to burn the koran and the predictable reaction their coverage created in the middle east. I couldn't help asking myself what would happen if the media told all their reporters to ignore that story and focus instead on remembering 9/11.

Here's my own attempt to change the focus. In 2002 I watched some clips from a documentary called 7 Days in September. This is before the conspiracy theories about 9/11, when we as a nation were still trying to digest the events of that day. This documentary is a compilation of clips from 24 videographers who spontaneously recorded what they saw in 2001. There are a number of poignant moments, one is when an iron worker breaks down in tears telling a crowd about pulling bodies out of the rubble for 2 days.

In trying to find that clip, I happened across a clip of him and his fellow iron workers a few days earlier trying to get to ground zero to volunteer.

Two days later, he is shown on the documentary breaking down in Union Square as he tries to cope with what he saw. His language is pretty colorful, so be warned.

Watching this again, I come away with the same conclusion made by the documentary. We still struggle to cope with this, as a nation, 9 years later.

We watched part of a 9/11 special Friday night that put us in a very somber mood for Saturday. I found myself trying to explain to Lindsey what had happened. It's so far beyond comprehension that there's still a state of disbelief even as you hear yourself say the words.
