Perhaps I should just let these picture speak for themselves...

Sunday night Sophie had her first trip to the ER. We say "first" b/c we're quite sure that it won't be her last. Given her very, ahhh, spirited nature I have a feeling we'll be visiting the ER again at some point...though hopefully not anytime soon!
So, we were at someone else's house and Sophie was running around with Bryce. She tried to turn a corner that proved to be quite slippery and wearing only socks she didn't have much traction with the floor... Soooo, down she went and smacked her head right on the corner of a wooden stair. Next thing we know, there is blood everywhere, gushing down her face and all over Bryce's white shirt. Long story short, we got the bleeding to stop and then took a trip to the ER (we were pretty 100% she was going to need stitches).
Bryce - being the brilliant guy that he is - thought to bring his laptop and The Jungle Book DVD with us to the hospital. Sophie doesn't get to watch much TV so it's a BIG treat when she does watch it and she looooooves the songs on Jungle Book. So, when they were ready to stitch her up, Bryce plugged that baby in and pushed Play. The doctor and her assistant told us that they wanted to wrap Sophie up baby-burrito style in this big white sheet to make sure that she couldn't move around while they were needle-and-threading. So there's my little girl, laying on the table, looking like a mummy all wrapped up in this white sheet and the doc's assistant is in position prepared to hold Sophie down and strong arm her into keeping her head still. And....
... Sophie did not move the entire time.
As soon as The Jungle Book turned on she was in a total trance. Laughing at Mowgli and Baloo and King Louie, loving every minute of it as they injected whatever it was to numb her head and then proceed to sew her up with three stitches. The only time Sophie cried was when the doctor's hands blocked her view of the laptop (which Bryce held up the whole time).
I believe the quote from the doctor's assistant was, "I have never seen anything like this before."
By the time we left, both the doctor and her assistant were agreed that they would be submitting a request for a DVD player in next year's budget.
And that concludes our weekend excitement! Sophie is doing great with her stitches. She calls the band-aid on her head her "sticker" and hardly seems to know it's there. That's my tough girl! We have to go back on Friday to get the stitches removed and already know what entertainment we'll be taking with us...

o how sad!! :(
poor little thing! I'm so impressed with how she handled it...I'll have to remember the DVD idea. :)
that ER story was seriously amazing. good thing you never let her watch tv!!! what a trooper!

soph is officially the toughest chicka i know.
Wow, poor Sophie. It reminds me of Laree's experience about that age. She was running to say hi to my dad when he got home from work or a meeting. She tripped and planted her head right into the corner of a wall. She ended up having to get stitches in almost the same place as Sophie. There weren't any DVD players to keep her entertained (nor would we have owned one at the time if there were). For quite a while after that she would show us how she hurt her head. I'm glad Sophie's such a trooper.
A new HP amongst us! Ouch!
Congrats on enduring your first night at the Emergency Room...with our first by this age we'd been there a ton of times (paranoid parents...we went for everything!). Soph can now join the ranks of those bearing "cool scars!"
Oooo, not a good place for that! We've been through 2 head injuries and those things bleed to no end. At least you guys and Sophie are all in agreement that there will be many more fun times ahead! Good luck with the stitches removal (not usually as bad as getting them)! We actually had a nurse ask if we wanted to keep the staples for scrapbook reasons... hum... yuck!
woo hoo, soph and i get to be scar twins now!!

so hilarious. sorry about the stitches, but it makes a fab story.
COME OVER and play sometime wouldja? It's been far too long.
We should get a DVD on our Rescue...
Bryce thinking overtime again.
Good man!
No fun for little Sophie, but the blog entry had me on the edge of my seat!
We were just at the ER about two weeks ago with Jocelyn when she pulled down and got "nursemaids elbow." Not nearly as interesting of a story, though.
I can't believe how you're out and about all over the place this close to the baby's arrival. Very impressive.
I'm kind of embarrased to admit that Sophie has had "nursemaid's elbow" twice. We made an emergency visit to the doctor's office the first time, though they made us wait 3 hours before the doctor could see us. However, the he did show me how to fix it myself because it's so common.
The second time I used my medical training and fixed it myself. Much cheaper, much less crying (by Sophie), and much quicker (no wait at all)! I'll offer classes at family reunions.
aww, poor Sophie! I'm glad you all made it through the ordeal. btw, I'd say she's a bit less 'spirited' than the average 2 year old - just wait until little Pierre hits 2 - you may need to rent your own personal chair at the ER. ;)
